‘If you are thinking of taking the plunge this year and buying a property, then now is a good time,’ says Alex Preshaw, director at Phillips Solicitors, specialising in residential property.

‘There’s likely to be more houses on the market in Spring, interest rates are still low and there are lots of options locally, whether you want to buy a new build home or an older property in Basingstoke and North Hampshire.  Consumer confidence is also slowly returning to the property market and Basingstoke has low unemployment which makes for a stronger local economy.’

So what could you do if you decide to move home?
• If you’re a first time house buyer, look at as many properties as possible.  Don’t rule out shared ownership, which allows you to buy a percentage of your home and pay rent on the remainder, with the option of increasing your share of the property as and when you can afford it.
• If you’re looking to upsize your home, be sensible as interest rates will not stay low for ever.
• If you want to hold on to your current home, consider letting it out to tenants, rather than selling up.

One of the attractions of buying a new home,’ concludes Alex, ‘is that you are paying towards finally owning your own property, and that’s just the point, it’ll be your own place which you can decorate and truly make your own.  Just make sure you choose a mortgage you can afford and whether you’re buying or selling a property, get proper legal advice.’
