March 2013 - Basingstoke led law group is praised for its work helping couples resolve family disputes

PRESS RELEASE

Date:  4 March 2013

Colin Jones, chief executive of Resolution, was guest of the North Hants Collaborative Law Group in Basingstoke.

Jones is visiting regional members of Resolution in what is the organisation’s 30th anniversary year, to see just how its members are making a difference.  Resolution was set up in 1982 by John Cornwell, an outstanding lawyer who dedicated much of his working life to the development and progress of family law.  His belief in a constructive, non-confrontational approach to family law helped establish the use of mediation, arbitration and collaborative law in resolving of family disputes.

Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show that there were 117,558 divorces in England and Wales in 2011, with the highest number in the 40 -44 age range.

‘Unfortunately, family break-ups are a sad fact of modern life.’ said Jones. ‘It is through the work of our 6,500 dedicated members that we are able to provide more supportive and cost effective ways of resolving relationship breakdowns and offer alternatives to heading straight to the courts.  I commend the good work that the North Hants Collaborative Law Group is doing and it is excellent to see that it is gaining recognition within the local community.’

Rob Parker of Phillips Solicitors established the North Hants Collaborative Law Group in 2011 with the aim of bringing together the local family lawyers who are trained to work collaboratively with disputing couples.

Rob explained, ‘Traditionally, if couples can't reach agreement, it is left to the family courts to decide, which can lead to heartache, uncertainty and great cost.  Collaborative law is different as each person has their own lawyer and you all meet together in the same room to work things out face to face. You have your lawyer by your side throughout the entire process and therefore benefit from legal advice as you go and you make a commitment at the outset not to go to court.  Rather than dealing through your family solicitors, you work with them to reach the best solution for you and your family’.
