Jonathan Pender to help start-ups and growing businesses at BeInspired 2012

“It’s a brave decision to start up a new business in the current economic climate but Phillips is an integral part of the supportive business environment that makes Basingstoke a good place to take that step,” says Jonathan Pender, Director at Phillips Solicitors. After more than 25 years in business in the town, Phillips has grown and developed - helping many others to do the same. “Basingstoke has served us well and we have learnt to adapt and change to suit ever-challenging business needs and we want to share our experience and lessons learnt with others”.

Jonathan will be a key speaker in the main theatre at the BeInspired 2012 business event, organised by Destination Basingstoke, at Belvedere House, Basing View on Thursday 19 April.  Jonathan’s presentation follows after Nick Hewer, from TV’s ‘The Apprentice’, has opened the conference and exhibition and given his ‘keynote speech’.

“At Be Inspired, I will be reflecting on the last 25 years and the characteristics that successful businesses need to survive in today’s tough climate. Be Inspired is a key event for business in Basingstoke and so it is a logical place for Phillips to be and we look forward to playing a central part - supporting the local economy and start-up businesses in particular. We want to focus on building confidence and how to get the best value from professionals. BeInspired aims to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs and help them succeed and create new business. It certainly gives a very positive message about Basingstoke.”

“We will be offering free legal advice in the mentoring area where 20 minute consultation appointments can be booked in advance or on the day. Our qualified solicitors will be ready to answer, in confidence, the sort of legal questions that we know all small businesses are asking.

It is a big step to employ your first member of staff and we expect employment issues to be top of the agenda – whether it’s taking on staff, dealing with disputes with staff – or having to consider redundancy and discrimination issues, our employment team will be on call all afternoon.”

Delegates will be able to meet other professionals in the mentoring area and get advice on accountancy, business finance, recruitment, training and development.

Finding the best support services, including the right bank for your needs as well as dealing with finding suitable premises are also expected to be areas where local businesses will welcome help.

Summarising his take on the local economy, Jonathan concluded “Quite a few businesses are doing reasonably well at the moment, but not shouting about it; in reality if they are surviving now then they will be in a very good position as soon as there is an up-turn in the economy, and coming to BeInspired can only help.”

Notes: BeInspired 2012, a regional business event for 2012, takes place on Thursday 19 April, 10.00-5.00pm, at Belvedere House, Basing View, RG21 4HG.  It’s a free one-day business mentoring, inspirational learning and networking event, aimed at anyone starting or growing a business this year.

Phillips Solicitors is supporting the event and will be available all day on their stand in the business services area, offering free 20 minute appointments from 1.00-5.00pm in the mentoring area.
