Virtual Basingstoke Marathon, Half Marathon & 10k Run

The coronavirus pandemic has led to many sporting events to be postponed until next year and the Destination Basingstoke Phillips Half Marathon and 10K Run is no exception.

However, the good news is that the event, which would have reached its 10th anniversary milestone, will take another form this year with virtual races.

This special one-off version of the event will also include a marathon distance.

For those who have turned to running during the lockdown it is hoped that this will be a good opportunity to put their training to good use.

The virtual races will allow everyone to take part safely and still enjoy the challenge of undertaking a real race. Entrants will run 26.2 miles or 13.1 miles or 10k, on any course of the runner’s choice, between 4th October and 18th October.

Participants will receive their medals and the results will be published. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three times for men and women.

Felicity Edwards, who is race director from the organisers, Destination Basingstoke, said: “The Covid-19 crisis has brought many challenges, but Destination Basingstoke is looking at the opportunity to stage the event in an innovative way that allows everyone to stay safe, yet retaining the much loved community feel of the usual race. I might even be able to run it myself for the first time this year!”

Phillips director, Jack Gardener, added: “Covid-19 has certainly made 2020 a year to remember. Whilst it is disappointing that the half marathon event cannot go ahead as usual this year, Phillips are thrilled to support the virtual event. Destination Basingstoke’s great alternative will hopefully allow more people to participate as there is no requirement to run it on the same day.”

“I really hope that the Basingstoke community will get involved to help raise funds for charity. I for one will dusting of my trainers and helping raise some funds.”

“We, at Phillips, wish everyone who takes part in this year’s event the very best of luck and look forward to seeing you all in 2021!”

As usual this year Phillips will be entering a team of 50 runners, who will be asked to use the opportunity to fundraise for our charity of the year Sebastian’s Action Trust, while other runners will be encouraged by Destination Basingstoke to support St Michael’s Hospice.
